HUMBOLDT — With seemingly blessed weather, Humboldt pulled off its 59th Biblesta Saturday without a hitch.
A good-sized crowd enjoyed the Bible-themed floats that came one after another down the 10-block procession.
Among those in town were members of Wichita’s McAdams Golden Age Club who enjoyed a cookout on the downtown square. The members travel by bus to attractions around the state “every once in a while,” said Lenora Tolbert, a member of the African American club. Members congregate on Tuesdays for socials and to test the cooking skills of each other.
The club has been organized for 50 years and, coincidentally, has 50 members, all 55 or older.
Throughout the day vendors, several affiliated with churches, offered a variety of food and non-alcoholic drinks. Entertainers provided a steady stream of music and spiritual encouragement from a large stage.
As the sun fell, a program directed at young people but with a message for older folks as well, unfolded. It featured Morgan Burns, who a couple of years ago was a star Kansas State football player.
Gary Larson, a Humboldt native and southeast Kansas Fellowship of Christian Athletes director, arranged for Burns to come to Biblesta. Larson said five months ago Burns had turned down an opportunity to play with the Tennessee Titans as a free agent to pursue a career in Christian ministry.
The evening event drew a crowd that filled available seating and a large scattering of lawn chairs.
