“Watching the children’s delight,” is Chamber Director Robin Schallie’s favorite part of Iola’s annual Christmas Block Party.

Whether it be visiting Santa, riding on the Kiwanis train or being treated with cocoa and cookies, the event is geared toward children.

And shoppers.

Friday’s event serves a dual purpose of seeing Santa and winning a chance at a free gift from 17 participating downtown merchants.

The event is from 4 to 7 p.m. with Santa arriving at his house on the square at 5 p.m. via fire truck.

Of special note is that photos with Santa will be offered at no cost for the first 137 takers thanks to donations. Professional photographer April Kroenke will be on hand to take the photos.

At last year’s event, a total of 700 photos were made available for free because of donations. Otherwise, the photos are $5 apiece.

Schallie said the pay-it-forward idea came from the generous souls who direct donations to the Iola Recreation Department that ensure no one is denied entrance to the Iola Municipal Pool during the summer months if they are short on funds.

“Hopefully, more donations will come forward so that no child is denied a photo with Santa,” Schallie said.

Also at Santa’s House is a special mailbox for letters to Santa.

Extra forms with special letterhead addressed to Santa will be available for those who may have forgotten the task.

Schallie assured that Santa answers every letter.

Special treats of hot cocoa and cookies will be provided by various business sponsors during Santa’s visits. Russell Stover Candies is also ensuring his house is adequately stocked.

THREE SHOPPERS will be selected to win gifts Friday evening.

Merchants will pool their collected punch cards for the drawing. The only requisite is that every merchant listed on the card must be visited.
