Tracy Keagle and Georgia Masterson were in a giving mood Friday.
The pair handed out sackloads of fresh produce, all free of charge, to folks of all stripes Friday afternoon.
The occasion was the inaugural Humanity House Fresh For You giveaway.
Keagle, who mans the Humanity House garden plot on the northeast corner of the courthouse square, handed out radishes, collard greens, broccoli, onions, cauliflower, kale and other vegetables.
Recipients were required to sign up via the Humanity House Facebook page; more than 200 did.
Keagle and Masterson plan to return to the plot each Friday afternoon. They’ll decide later whether to set up another giveaway day.
Keagle grows most of the produce, although other farmers from the Allen County Farmers Market, after hearing of her endeavor, donated leftover produce from their sales the day prior.
Keagle expects the produce to become more abundant as warmer weather arrives.
In addition to the free food, Keagle is selling bundles of asparagus for $5 apiece at the Farmers Market, of which, $2 will got toward a Little Lending Library program in Allen County. The asparagus is available from Toby’s Garden Center in Chanute.
Keagle hopes to set up book exchange centers throughout the county: four in Iola and one each in LaHarpe and Moran. Those willing to assist with the project are encouraged to contact the Humanity House Facebook page.
