The above voting ward map shows who lives in Ward 2, which covers the northeast quadrant of Iola. Even though there is no name on the ballots for a City Council seat, two Iolans, Mike McKinnis and Carl Slaugh, have announced they are running as write-in candidates. COURTESY/CITY OF IOLA

While there’s no name on the ballot, voters in the northeast part of Iola will have options when they head to the polls a week from today.

Carl Slaugh, retired Iola city administrator, notified the Register this morning that he is running as a write-in candidate for the Iola City Council.

“We have a great community,” Slaugh wrote, “and I would be happy to work towards preserving our infrastructure and making improvements as we have the financial means and public will.”

Slaugh is seeking to represent Ward 2, which lies east of Cottonwood and generally north of East, Carpenter and Douglas streets. (See attached map.)

Slaugh is the second Iolan to seek election via write-in vote, joining Mike McKinnis, a business instructor at Pittsburg State University.

Daniel Mathew, who currently holds the seat, is not running for re-election.
