Iola High School’s forensics team brought in a number of top finishers in a pair of competitions, qualifying several members for the state meet in the process.
The IHS one-act team of Drew Smith, Katarina McIntosh, Jonathan Michaels, Whit Olson, Audrea Stahl, Skylar Strickler and Reagan Webster took home first place overall in competition at Uniontown High School on Friday.
On Saturday, Jasmine Bannister placed first in informative speaking. She also teamed with Andrew Kipp to take first in improvised duet acting. McIntosh, meanwhile, grabbed first place in oral interpretation of poetry.
Oher IHS competitors Saturday were Eli Johns, second, and Hayden Wolf, third, in extemporaneous speaking; Chris Harrington, fourth, and Kipp, sixth, in informative speaking; Jonathan Michaels, second, and Wolf, fourth, in original oration; Chris Michael and Katie Thompson, second, and Harrington and Autumn Snesrud, fifth, in improvised duet acting; McIntosh, third, and Maggie Terhune, sixth, in serious solo acting; and Smith, third, in humorous solo acting.
All first- and second-place finishers qualified for the state meet.
The one-act team competed Friday at UHS; other events took place Saturday.
The squad also competed Thursday at a team meet at Chanute. Bannister finished second there in humorous solo acting. Terhune was fifth in serious solo acting. Harrington and Snesrud finished sixth in improvised duet acting. Christopher Hines was sixth in original oration. Johns finished sixth in extemporaneous speaking.
