Spirit of Pink, a local fundaising organization typically geared to help breast cancer patients, has set its sights on a brighter Thanksgiving for families in need.
A number of Spirit of Pink volunteers, area teenagers and other youth groups will hunt for food items as part of a citywide scavenger hunt Saturday.
The goal is to donate at least 20 meals for Thanksgiving, said Billie Collins, a Spirit of Pink organizer.
“Thanksgiving is a day for remembering what you are thankful for and I hate to think families in our town will go without,” Collins said.
Hunters will be armed with “shopping lists” in search of basic Thanksgiving necessities, including stuffing, a bag or box of potatoes, two cans of vegetables (any variety), cranberry sauce, a can of yams, cake mix and Jell-O.
The excursion kicks off at 6 p.m. at the home of Laura Sellman, 422 E. Madison Ave. Lists will be given to all who show up for the two-hour hunt.
For the centerpiece — a turkey — participants are seeking monetary donations, Collins said.
She figures a Thanksgiving meal for an average family can be had for less than $20.
Those wishing to donate financially — or to ensure their residence is visited on Saturday for the scavenger hunt — can contact Collins at (913) 683-5132. Those who know of families in need are encouraged to call as well.
“We’ve already gotten calls from people telling me they’ve bought extra because they want us to stop by,” Collins said.
Early donations also can be taken to the Collins household at 701 East St. before Saturday.
