It’s harder than it looks to clear off a grocery store shelf, Donna Kaehr admitted Saturday morning.
Kaehr, working on behalf of the Iola Community Pantry, was the grand prize winner at Saturday’s fourth annual Iola Rotary Club Grocery Grab at G&W Foods.
Kaehr had five minutes to load up as many groceries as she could get.
All proceeds will benefit the Community Pantry, and at a perfect time, with the holiday giving season just around the corner. (The winning ticket was for the Iola Register, which tapped the Community Pantry as a worthy recipient.)
Kaehr was strategic during her spree, bringing in $1,267.51 in her five-minute shopping spree.
She focused primarily on canned goods and pre-packaged meals, two of the items with the highest demand at the pantry.
For example, one recipient is hard of hearing and has difficulty finding a job, Kaehr explained, and could benefit most from the prepackaged meals that could be heated up in the microwave.
Caned fruits are traditionally a popular item at the Pantry, as are canned vegetables and soups.
Aside from a little difficulty in pushing the canned goods straight into the cart, Kaehr found her groove midway through the spree, simply by loading cases of food at a time.
