The Neosho River faces a flood warning until Saturday morning.
The river reached flood stage Thursday morning and was expected to crest at 26.5 feet just after midnight, according to the National Weather Service. The river is likely to fall below flood stage by Friday evening.
Flood stage is 23 feet. At 8:30 a.m. Thursday, the river was at 22.9 feet.
The worst of the flooding is expected to be just south of Allen County, between Petrolia and Chanute.
The National Weather Service recommends avoiding areas near the river.
Do not drive into flooded areas or go around barricades. Nearly two feet of water will carry most vehicles away.
“Turn around, don’t drown,” says the National Weather Service.
THE WATER plant at Iola reported 2.30 inches of rain fell over the area on Wednesday.
That brings the total rain for the month to 3.20 inches. At least some amount of rain has fallen nearly every day so far this month.
It also marks the first time this year that the amount of rainfall has exceeded the average. As of April 29, the county was 3.09 inches below normal for the year so far. Since April 30, a total of 4.48 inches have fallen.
