CHANUTE — Kennedy’s Attic, an antiques store in downtown Chanute, was destroyed by a fire early Saturday, as was the home of its owners, Tim and Sheila Kennedy, who lived upstairs.

The family was awakened by the smell of smoke. The Kennedys’ 15-year-old daughter, Britney, was the first to notice the smell, she told KOAM TV.

She awakened her parents and brother, grabbed their two pets, and the family evacuated the building, which was fully engulfed by the time firefighters arrived.

The building at 20 N. Highland Ave., was a total loss. Crews from five fire departments, including Iola’s, assisted with fighting the fire.

Chanute Fire Chief Kevin Jones told KOAM the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
