Leah Mueller likes to learn.
About livestock. Science. Nutrition. Math.
So it comes as no surprise that Leah likes FFA.
Having just emerged from a swine reproduction and nutrition presentation at Wednesday’s FFA Career Day, Leah was impressed.
“I didn’t realize raising swine was such a big industry in Kansas,” she said. “There’s a lot to learn here.”
LEAH, a junior, serves as treasurer for the FFA program at Humboldt High School. She’s been in FFA since she was a freshman. The program has about 20 members.
Her favorite part is learning how to raise and care for animals. She enjoys showing livestock and participating in the meats judging competitions.
The daughter of Natalie and Terryl Mueller, Leah raises livestock. She’s also a member of Iola’s City Slickers 4-H Club.
FFA appeals to lots of different people.
There are skill-a-thon contests. Welding contests. Public speaking competitions.
“None of those are for me,” Leah said, preferring to stick with animals. Though she does admit she enjoys meeting new people at the FFA competitions.
“I like the relationships you build with people you don’t necessarily go to school with. It’s fun to see them at other functions, too.”
In school, Leah’s favorite classes are algebra II and anatomy and physiology.
Leah also enjoys running cross country, is on the student council and is involved with the school’s journalism program.
Her biggest passion, however, is precision shooting with an air pistol, which she’s honed by participating in 4-H competitions around the state. She’s also on the school’s trap-shooting team.
