GAS — Pat Laver Spencer and Kay Collins took advantage of a bluebird day Thursday to partially repair weather damage to the GAS sign at the south edge of Fees Park.
Runoff from recent rains washed over a barrier at the top of the sign, which disrupted beds of loose white rock that form the letters and also carried in debris.
“Just a patch job,” said Spencer of the work. “We’ll get with Steve (Robb, Gas superintendent) and see what the city guys can do. He’ll have a good idea. He always does.”
Something more substantial than lawn edging to divert runoff is needed, Spencer surmised. The sign, in place since the park opened in 2005, “needs a major overhaul,” she said.
Spencer leads the Fees Park Committee, which has raised money to help develop the park. The park, she boasted, has become a destination for many in the area. “You seldom drive by and not see someone using it.”
A quarter-mile-long walking track, made of recycled vehicle tires and with enough give to put a spring in users’ steps, “is really popular,” Spencer said.
The last major addition is a large set of playground equipment, with installation expected soon.
“It’s going right there, where those swings are,” she said, pointing to a large bed of sand with a heavy wood frame border.
Cost was $9,200. When the committee got close to having enough to make the purchase, Gas councilmen in early April agreed to loan the remainder, $3,300.
“We need just another $2,300 to pay off the loan,” Spencer said. “We’ll have it long before the loan is due,” in December of 2012.
The committee’s annual garage sale, which usually nets $1,000 or more, will be June 3-4 in the Holloway building near the post office and park-themed merchandise — T-shirts, cups and such — is available at several places around town. And, there’s the annual soup supper in the fall.
Donations also are helpful and most appreciated, Spencer was quick to note. They may be left at or mailed to Bank of Gas, P.O. Box 158, Gas 66742.
