Happy Hearts FCE members met June 18 at Riverside Park in Iola.

Marla Wilson gave the lesson on how dancing is a healthy and fun family activity.

Emilia Wilkerson and her mother were guests. She explained the various types of dance, and tap danced for the club.

Dance provides benefits physically, mentally and behavorially, members were told. Dance builds movement skills in young children, while also helping them maintain their proper weight, strength and energy, Wilson said.

Those who dance tend to have higher levels of confidence as well.

Dance should, above all else, be fun, Wilson said.

While mastering steps is a good thing, try to think of dancing with young children as a good excuse to have fun, learn something new and explore your creativity, she said.

Remember to take breaks, drink water, listen to your bodies and laugh a lot.

The next Happy Hearts meeting is Aug. 20 at the Iola Public Library for Fun Night.
