The Union Pacific’s steam locomotive No. 844 — the final steam locomotive built by the railroad giant in 1944 — will make a stop in Woodson County Sunday morning.
The steam engine will be at the Yates Center-Durand Rail Yard, about a mile east of Yates Center on U.S. 54, as part of No. 844’s Valley Eagle Heritage Tour. The stop should last from about 10 o’clock to 10:30.
The locomotive is headed back to Cheyenne, Wyo., from Harlingen, Texas. The month-long trip launched from Cheyenne April 2 and will end April 29.
From Yates Center, the locomotive will make a whistlestop pass by Paola before arriving at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo.
It will be on display all day Monday before heading out to Nebraska and Wyoming.
The engine is in Coffeyville today.
