Health fair, makeovers part of 2009 event
A sure-fire cure for the winter blahs is just around the corner with the upcoming 2010 Business EXPO.
The annual event will unfold in the Recreation Community Building in Riverside Park Jan. 29 and 30. EXPO activities are that Friday evening and all the next day.
EXPO attendees have a chance at winning $500 in EXPO bucks to spend at participating businesses, said Jana Taylor, director of the Iola Area Chamber of Commerce, organizer of the annual event.
More than 40 area businesses will display their wares at booths and provide drawings for additional prizes.
THE LITTLE Theater will host two special events Saturday. From 8 a.m., an hour before the EXPO opens, until noon, Allen County Hospital will have its annual health fair.
Barbara Smith, executive secretary at Allen County Hospital, said the health fair would replace the one ACH held previously each April.
The event will offer a wide variety of health screenings for individuals, including those for complete blood chemistry profile, complete blood count, cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, blood chemistry panel including glucose, basic metabolic panel and prostate specific antigen. There will be a small (as yet to be determined) fee for these screenings, Smith said.
In addition, body fat , bone density, height/weight and blood pressure will all be tested for free. A limited number of free colorectal kits will also be available, Smith said.
From 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, a fashion show will hit the Little Theater stage, with local vendors showcasing spring styles. Two individuals will receive a mini-makeover, compliments of the Chamber, during the show. Those interested in winning must register Friday night at the Chamber booth.
The makeover includes attention to hair, nails and makeup and provides winners with a new outfit.
Businesses participating in the fashion show will be Duane’s Flowers, Annie’s Attic, McGinty-Whitworth, Party Girls, Town Square Tannery, Capper’s Jewelry and Curves.
TAYLOR SAID attendance at previous EXPOs topped 2,000 and drew people from throughout southeast Kansas and as far away as Kansas City and Wichita.
“It’s really a fun time and a time for people to get a much better idea of all the things that we have to offer right here,” she said.
Booths will have representatives from the National Guard, insurance companies, a broad spectrum of retail business, local physicians and such social network agencies as the Pregnancy Resource Center.
People trekking through the maze of booths also would be well advised to carry along a bag; giveaways will be a feature at most stops.
Corporate sponsors for this year’s EXPO are Allen County Hospital, Copy Products, Inc., Iola Insurance Associates and Personal Service Insurance.
