Some problems are good ones.
Michael Covey and Kurt Jackson have alleviated some of those “good problems” by expanding their business, J&C Electrical Solutions LLC, to Iola last fall.
“We got too big to operate out of our homes anymore,” said Covey who lives in Carlyle, while Jackson lives in Yates Center.
They have since purchased the old Embassy Shoes building at 10 W. Jackson to house their offices and equipment, and even that’s not large enough, Covey said.
“We don’t really have a place for our large trucks and our utility poles, but it has something other places we looked at didn’t,” Covey said.
Jackson and Covey rent out the upstairs apartment, thus giving them an extra revenue stream as J&C continues to grow.
They offer electric service in practically every venue, from residential, commercial and industrial to oil and gas fields.
“Our bucket and digger derrick vehicles make us versatile to serve many different types of customers,” Jackson said.
Their specialized equipment allows them to cast a wider net as well.
They work anywhere from Leavenworth to Pittsburg, Fort Scott to El Dorado. Jackson is master certified to work in both Kansas and Missouri.
Jackson handles the technical services department, from project development and personnel to material coordination. Covey, meanwhile, oversees the business management side.
“Our partnership gives us an advantage, so we can focus on our own duties and know the other is taking care of the other,” Covey said.
The business partnership started in early 2013. Both grew up in the Moran area and graduated from Marmaton Valley High School.
“Mike went to school with my older brother, and we’ve been friends since we were kids,” Jackson said. “We’ve been pretty aggressive in trying to expand.”
Business started modestly that first year before expanding quickly in 2014.
Three other employees, Thomas and Timothy Stinnett and Dalton Houk — also Marmaton Valley alums — have since joined the team.
“Tom has worked with us since almost the beginning,” Covey said.
Tom takes care of commercial and oil and gas field electrical services. Tim handles much of the industrial and commercial electrical. Dalton works with residential projects.
“All three are dependable and hard working,” Covey said.
