MORAN – Flying high were Uniontown High’s Eagle girls Friday as the basketball team opened its 2011-2012 with a decisive win here against the Marmaton Valley High Wildcats.
Securing a 58-28 win, the Eagles’ fast play and full-court press proved too much for the Wildcats. The Eagles held Marmaton Valley to single digit scoring in all four game periods.
“We started a little slow but got it going after a while,” said Kenny Holt, Uniontown head coach, referring to the Eagles’ 12 first-period points.
Holt said a fluid offense led to a solid performance by the entire team, something he hopes will become a regular occurrence during a challenging season.
“I liked our flow. We got it going and we saw a lot of nice passes,” he said. “We got it into our bigs and that’s what we wanted.”
Junior Hayden Rathbun helped seal the victory with a game high 18 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Her three assists were the team high.
“Rathbun played OK,” Holt said with a hint of sarcasm.
Kent Houk, head coach of the Marmaton Valley girls basketball team, said the Wildcat girls played hard but sloppy play and turnovers hurt them in the end.
“We were trying to push the ball, fast-breaking with the dribble but we need to be fast-breaking with the pass,” he said, referring to why the team committed so many turnovers.
And when you turn the ball over, it’s hard to win, Houk said.
“I thought our girls played decent man (defense) but we just got beat a few times.”
In the losing effort, Marmaton Valley’s sophomore Kaitlin Ensminger led the team with 12 and two baskets from behind the arc.
