HUMBOLDT—Homecoming victory — check. Humboldt High’s Cubs dominated here Friday night in a one-sided match against Eureka High’s Tornadoes. The Cubs trounced their opponent 58-37.
Just seconds after the opening tip, the Cubs snagged the lead off a fastbreak layup from Tanner McNutt. They never let it go.
Strong paint play by Noah Thornbrugh early gave the Cubs a 34-21 lead at the break. Defense also was a factor.
“We did a good job with the half court press,” said David Taylor, Cubs head coach. “We made things hard on their shooters.”
It was more of the same in the second half. The McNutt and Thornbrugh combo continued to hamper the Tornadoes defense. The pair combined for 40 points in the game and led the Cubs to the 21 point victory.
Taylor said good ball movement — Humboldt has 18 assists as a team — led to a big night for Cubs.
Thornbrugh and McNutt led all scorers with 23 and 17 points respectively. Thornbrugh also had game highs with eight rebounds and six blocks.
Trey Johnson led the Cubs with seven assists.
Eureka’s Wes Moots led the Tornadoes’ offense with 13 points.
