Emergency crews scoured sections of Coal Creek in southern Allen County Tuesday night and Wednesday after fielding a report of a possible submerged vehicle.
So far, the searches came up empty, Sheriff Bryan Murphy told the Register.
At about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, a motorist passing Coal Creek near the intersection of 800 Street and Delaware Road spotted what might have been headlights bobbing downstream before quickly submerging.
The Sheriffs Department was assisted by Humboldt firefighters, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks officials and the Chanute Fire Departments swift water rescue unit for several hours in the fruitless search.
There were no indications a vehicle entered the water, Murphy said. But were going to keep checking.
Crews continue to monitor the creek levels as well, Murphy said.
Problem is, steady rains overnight Tuesday continued to fill the creek to its banks and beyond.
We went back to look (Wednesday) and the water was up significantly from the night before, Murphy said.
