When Kobey Miller stepped into the role of FFA Chapter President at Crest High School last year, it challenged his leadership skills.
Everyone looked up to him for guidance.
“There were some challenges I had to overcome, just learning how to be a leader and helping everybody,” Miller said.
Then, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, it threw everyone for a loop. Suddenly, FFA as they knew it had been changed. The in-person contests everyone enjoyed so much were suddenly canceled. No State. No Nationals.
Miller had to step up as a leader and “just go with it.”
This year, Miller is again serving as chapter president.
The Crest chapter decided not to participate in virtual contests this year. And in-person events do not exist.
Though not having any competitions makes it a little easier, it’s not the same, Miller said.
“We haven’t got to really do much until this week,” he said.
This is FFA Week, when the chapter sets a different theme every day.
Monday was “Official Dress Day” and “Trivia Day.”
Tuesday was “Drive Your Tractor To School.” Eight students drove a tractor; Miller said he lives too far away to do that.
Wednesday was “Teacher Appreciation Day” and the chapter hosted a breakfast.
Thursday was “Ag Tour Day.”
Friday was the chapter’s big event: “A Day on the Farm.” Students asked farmers to bring in various animals, and gave tours and safety presentations to elementary students.
