The job as public works director doesn’t earn many compliments, but they were being dished in Mitch Garner’s direction during the Allen County commission meeting on Monday morning.

Commissioner Bill King complimented county crews for their work they did on the Moran ambulance station, saying the site looks very nice. Commissioner Jerry Daniels applauded Garner’s crews for work done on roads.

“I have heard several people talking about the work done just south of Humboldt and everyone is very pleased,” Daniels said. “Now they just want to know when the other half of the work will be done.”

Daniels also complimented Garner on how well he dictated the county’s priorities for road repairs to Bettis Asphalt, and that they were staying on task.

Garner believes the rest of the work will be done in early 2020.

The county has plans of repairing four more roads damaged for excessive use.

The county intends to use the $540,000 it is set to receive from a cost-share program with KDOT for the remaining projects. Garner said the county will probably have to use its own funds before receiving the grant.

IN OTHER news, Garner said a necessary part for the decommissioned rock crusher has yet to arrive. He explained it could take up to two weeks before the crusher is up and running again. At that point Murphy Tractor will begin training county employees on how to maintain the $1 million machine.

“I think it will be well worth the money to have them come in once a week and every time we get a new employee, to train them on how to maintain the machine properly,” King said of last week’s meeting with the company’s representatives.

When they are able to crush more rock, they will take some to the Moran site so mud is not tracked onto the highway.

COMMISSIONERS renewed a contract with Apt Law Offices, LLC, to be the guardian ad litem in juvenile cases. The contract will pay the firm $5,100 a month. The firm will receive an additional $4,500 a month for an adult misdemeanor contract. The contract will cover all expenses except those associated with an appeal to the district court.

The law office will pursue any appeals and bill them separately at a rate of $87.50 per hour and will not exceed $3,750.
