A new Allen County attorney will be nominated during a convention of Republican precinct representatives Saturday afternoon in the basement meeting room of Community National Bank, 120 E. Madison Ave.
The meeting starts at 1 p.m.
Wade Bowie, assistant county attorney the past 51⁄2 years, is the only candidate announced thus far to succeed Jerry Hathaway. Hathaway resigned Dec. 30 to take a prosecutor’s position in Springfield, Mo. His last day here was Friday.
Bowie stepped in as intern county attorney this week and will remain in that position until Gov. Sam Brownback makes the expected appointment of Saturday’s nomination.
Bowie, as was Hathaway, is a Republican.
Jim Talkington, Allen County Republican chairman, said 22 precinct men and women are required to attend the meeting, or provide a proxy, to establish a quorum of the 42 precinct positions in the county. Nomination will be determined by a majority of the quorum.
Bowie and any other attorney with an interest in the position may speak to convention attendees ahead of the election to determine nomination.
No residency requirement is attached to selection of a county attorney, in a regular election or through a nomination process such as Saturday’s. The Allen County attorney is paid $52,228 a year.
