Iola has given the Kansas Power Pool a two-year notice that it will no longer purchase wholesale electricity through the consortium.
Iola City Council members unanimously approved Monday sending the notice.
The notice frees the city to look at other energy suppliers, such as Westar or the Kansas Municipal Energy Agency.
The city also remains free to continue negotiating with KPP.
Council members agreed to send the notice after learning Iola receives no financial considerations from KPP for the city’s ability to produce electricity to meet peak demand.
While City Administrator Carl Slaugh said KPP’s Board of Directors was to meet today to discuss a proposal for cities such as Iola — ones capable of producing their own electricity — council members agreed there was no penalty in sending the two-year notice now.
