Local artisan and palm-leaf weaver, Billy Ray Hayes, spoke in front of an audience at the Iola Public Library on Tuesday. Following the talk, the Register reported that Hayes, as a young man, had served as in served in the U.S. military in Hawaii.
Well, this reporter misheard his subject. Turns out, Billy Ray Hayes did not go to Hawaii to serve. He went to Hawaii to surf. Hayes came into the newspaper office on Thursday to correct the record, saying that he doesnt deserve the honor and credit that are the rightful tokens of our veterans.
