Allen County Community College’s drama students will examine love in all its shapes and stages with the upcoming theatrical production “Almost, Maine.”
The play runs Dec. 1-3 at the ACCC Theatre. Tickets are now on sale at Iola Pharmacy, $6 for adults and $4 for students.
An ensemble cast will present nine different scenes, all of which occur at 9 p.m. on a Friday night in the fictional town of Almost, Maine. Each deals with love in some aspect, explained director Susan McKinnis.
“It looks at different types of relationships, it looks at friendship, it looks at romantic love,” she said. “It examines love as it’s starting up and as it disintegrates.”
The play is not unlike the college’s one-act stories in that each scene features different characters. However, since Almost is supposed to be a relatively small town, the characters in different scenes are familiar with each other.
“They’ll refer to characters in other scenes,” McKinnis said. “It’s really an enjoyable play, and we have a talented cast.”
Actors are Kiley Grimes, Mack Melvin, Sarah Kies, Dakota Yohe, Archie Huskey, Grace Cameron, Amanda McDermon, Taylor Crosby, Jessica Garrison, John Thompson, Jessica Truitt, Valeree Winslow, Whit Olson, Nathan Hill, Anthony Ellis, Brandon
Eckley, Sarah Steedly, Jonathan Schmidt, Amber Widerholt and Shelby Cruz.
McKinnis also lauded the backstage crew for its set design. One scene, based outdoors, required crews to build a faux porch and housefront, which they did, down to the shingle.
Working with so many actors in different settings provides a different set of challenges than a traditional play, she said, “but it’s also good in that it gives us some flexibility in rehearsals.”
