Cold, not snow, closes area schools

Area schools, including Iola, were shuttered today because of icy, snow-packed roads and frigid temperatures.
“The roads aren’t bad, but we thought it was better to take the day off because of the cold,” said Dr. Craig Neuenswander, superintendent of USD 257 schools. “If someone were to be out on the roads and slipped into a ditch or fell while walking, and they went long without help in this cold they could be in real trouble.”
“Besides,” Neuenswander noted, “we have two snow days built into the schedule,” meaning today’s lost day won’t have to be made up.
He was uncertain whether classes would resume Wednesday. Tonight’s low temperature is predicted to approach zero.
“We’ll decide early Wednesday morning whether to have classes,” Neuenswander said.
