If you’ve been waiting for a chance to serve on your local city council or school board, now’s the time to decide. Candidates have about five weeks, until noon on June 3, to file for election.

A primary election, if needed, is scheduled for Aug. 6. The general election will be Nov. 5.

All candidates should file at the Allen County Clerk’s Office at the courthouse, except candidates for USD 413, who file in Neosho County, and USD 479, who file in Anderson County.

IN IOLA, candidates can file for the positions of mayor and four council members. Terms will expire for Mayor Jon Wells and four council members, Chase Martin in Ward 1, Daniel Mathew in Ward 2, Kim Peterson in Ward 3, and Aaron Franklin in Ward 4.

The USD 257 School Board will elect at-large positions for the first time, as the board abandoned a system that elected representatives by geographical districts. The

hope is to encourage more candidates to file for election. Current school board members whose terms will expire include Jennifer Taylor, Doug Dunlap, Mary Apt and Dan Willis.

Allen Community College’s Board of Trustees will fill three seats, as those of Spencer Ambler, Ken McGuffin and Mary Kay Heard will expire.

OTHER CITY offices up for election, and the current office holder, include:

City of Bassett: Mayor and five council members

City of Elsmore: Mayor and five council members

City of Gas: Three council members

City of Humboldt: Mayor and four council members, Ward 1, Position 1; Ward 1, Position 2; Ward 2, Position 1; Ward 2, Position 2

City of LaHarpe: Mayor; two council members
