Iola will ring in the 2010 holiday season in style Tuesday with a lighting ceremony and the first arrival of the season of Santa Claus.
The festivities begin at 6 p.m. with Iolan Becky French serenading the crowd with an assortment of Christmas carols.
The downtown Christmas lights will be turned on at the stroke of 6:30, followed five minutes later by Santa’s welcoming parade, which starts on North Washington Avenue.
Santa will greet children at his house on the southeast corner of the square at about 6:50 until 8 o’clock.
Santa will return to the house each Thursday until Christmas from 6 to 8 p.m.
Corresponding with Santa also has never been easier. Youngsters can leave their letters in the mailbox in front of his house — including a return address ensures a response — and by submitting letters to the Iola Register. For each letter the Register receives, the newspaper will donate $1 to the Adopt-A-Child program in the sender’s area.
