A group of business owners from east Iola are expected to attend tonight’s City Council meeting to express concerns about proposed road repair.
The city is working with the Kansas Department of Transportation to rebuild much of U.S. 54, which becomes East Street into Iola.
The original plans were for the repairs to extend from LaHarpe to Iola’s city limits. An amended plan would lengthen the project about 800 feet into Iola.
The businesses are concerned about how the repairs would limit access during the construction. Councilman Scott Stewart told the Register information he received this morning may alleviate some of those concerns.
The stretch of U.S. 54 in Iola is in need of repair, Stewart said, probably as much as the rest of the crumbling highway.
“Putting asphalt on top would be like putting on a Band-Aid,” Stewart said.
The replacement work in Iola should last about three weeks, weather permitting, Stewart noted, plus the state would fund the lion’s share of the cost.
