A century after Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low formed Girl Scouts of America, the group is going strong in Iola.
Low’s vision was to help young girls become courageous, confident and of good character which would, in effect, make the world a better place.
About 50 local girls were inducted or awarded badges at Tuesday night’s Investiture & Rededication Ceremony in the Jefferson Elementary gymnasium.
Prior to opening the ceremony, the Brownie and Daisy Girl Scouts told those in attendance what ingredients are needed to make the American flag: Red apples for courage, blue jeans for loyalty, purity requiring white marshmallows, and stars “to make it come out right.”
“We stir and stir and then we see that what we have made – Old Glory!,” shouted the crowded gymnasium.
Iola troop leader Traci Plumlee said she’s pushing more girls to wear their blue and brown vests in recognition of the 100th birthday of Girl Scouts as well as Kansas’ sesquicentennial.
“Be proud to wear them,” she told the girls Tuesday night.
