Jim and Leonard Smith didn’t give it a second thought to open their doors at 401 E. Madison for Sunday afternoon’s Christmas homes tours.

“We’re animal lovers,” Jim said of he and his older brother.

Combined with their love of fine architecture, the Smiths were a natural for Allen County Animal Rescue Facility’s annual home tours.

“One hundred percent of proceeds from the homes tour go to benefit ACARF,” said organizer Ginny Hawk. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door of any of the five participating homes or ahead of time at Classy Attic, Sophisticated Rose or at the ACARF animal shelter on U.S. 54 at the east edge of LaHarpe.

THE BROTHERS Smith purchased their 1905 home in April and have renovated it extensively.

Of special note are its original chandeliers, some of which Jim discovered tucked away in the attic and garage.

Jim did all the renovation work himself, including removing walls, installing bathrooms and extensive landscaping.

The wallpaper in each room is exquisite, rich with deep hues and floral patterns.

Smith purchased the paper from Sticks & Weeds in Le Roy, he said. The store is noted for its wide selection of wall paper and its ability to special order others.

The Smiths have six pets: four cats and two dogs.

Jim is a frequent contributor to ACARF by contributing pet food and cleaning supplies.

“I’m also up for taking care of the animals and cleaning out cages,” he said.

Other homeowners participating in the tour are Cheryl and Howard Dillow, 1331 2000 St.; Virginia and Larry Macha, 2805 Funston St.; Deanne and Mark Burris, 308 Fairway Ave.; and Beth and David Toland, 1395 1300 St.

Doors open from 1 to 6 p.m.
