CHANUTE — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Neosho County Sheriff’s Department are investigating the discovery late Sunday of skeletal remains in rural Neosho County.
Neosho County Undersheriff Greg Taylor told the Chanute Tribune a farmer discovered the remains near the intersection of Ford and 50th roads. The location is south and east of Thayer.
The remains — the better part of a full skeleton, Taylor said — were taken to the Shawnee County coroner’s office for examination.
The body has not been identified.
The farmer was mowing in the area and spotted the remains near the edge of a soybean field, a couple hundred yards off the road.
The death is being treated as suspicious, the Tribune reported.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Neosho County Sheriff’s Office or call 1 (800) KSCRIME.

IN AN unrelated matter, the Kansas Highway Patrol is appealing for somebody to step forward to resolve a hit-and-run death in rural Allen County early Sunday.
The body of Billy Lee Montgomery, 26, Springfield, Mo., was spotted in the eastbound lane of U.S. 54, about two miles west of Moran, at about 1:50 a.m.
Allen County Sheriff Bryan Murphy said Montgomery had been seen walking along U.S. 169  in Anderson County earlier Saturday night, and had apparently been dropped off along the highway after getting into an argument with a female acquaintance sometime after midnight.
The Kansas Highway Patrol is asking for anyone who may be familiar with Montgomery, or who may have seen him or anything suspicious in the area of U.S. 54 or U.S. 169 to call KHP Trooper Brett Goins at 620-431-2100.
