Iolan Lee Berg, a volunteer firefighter, pleaded guilty this week to setting a series of grass and hay fires in northern Allen County.
Berg, 19, pleaded guilty in Allen County District Court to five felony counts of arson. The pleas came in front of Judge Daniel Creitz, who scheduled Berg’s sentencing for Jan. 24.
Berg was accused of 21 counts of arson in all. The guilty pleas came as part of an agreement with Allen County Attorney Wade Bowie, who dropped the remaining 16 counts.
Berg was arrested Sept. 13 at the scene of one of the fires north of Iola along Utah Road.
One victim reported the loss of 250 big bales of hay, valued at $25,000.
