The change over to attendance centers for USD 257 is right on schedule, according to director of operations and maintenance Scott Stanley.
About 55 classrooms must be transferred from one building to another across town, Stanley told the USD 257 school board members Tuesday night. So far the maintenance staff has moved 10 rooms in two days. Stanley said at this rate all the classrooms will be moved by July.
McKinley Elementary will serve ANW Co-op pre-school and kindergarten students, Jefferson Elementary will host first and second grade students, Lincoln will serve third and fourth grade students and fifth grade students will move to the third level of Iola Middle School.
Lori Maxwell, elementary school principal, complimented the USD 257 staff for working as a team to get the move done quickly and efficiently.
Kathy Koehn, USD 257 food service coordinator, gave an update on the summer food program. The program will start on Monday and will serve children ages 1 to 18 free meals at three different locations: Riverside Park, Trinity United Methodist Church and the Iola High School cafeteria. Trinity and the high school will be sites for both breakfast and lunches while workers at Riverside Park will serve only lunch.
The board approved the hires of Kathy Shelby and Selena Wallace as point of sales associates for the summer food program.
Board members also hired Keith Mallory as assistant band director, Karen Graham and Jan Shook as USD 257 elementary teachers and Ann Pomayo as a basketball coach and Cody Hager as middle school head girls track coach.
The board accepted the resignation of Ed Hoover as a bus driver and Samantha Branson as Iola High School English and journalism teacher.
After an hour long executive session the board accepted a plan of improvement signed by USD 257 administration and Greta Adams, Iola choir and strings instructor.
