City to hire police
YATES CENTER Two full-time police officers soon could join the Yates Center police force. City council members agreed May 7 to hire two officers to assist Police Chief Doug Smoot, after an officer who worked with him resigned, according to The Yates Center News. The city also has received numerous complaints about grass being too tall on some properties but said Smoot didnt have time to address the problems because he was shorthanded. The decision to hire officers immediately followed that discussion.
Barn quilt project
teaches skills
CHANUTE Eighth grade students at Royster Middle School are learning skills in English, math and history as part of a project to create barn quilts, according to The Chanute Tribune. The students studied the Civil War and Underground Railroad in history classes, then read books about Harriet Tubman and slavery in English. Patterns used for the barn quilts were inspired by Underground Railroad quilts. Students used math to figure costs of the project and profits to be used for a field trip.

LEBO A tornado touched down at BETO Junction May 3 but didnt cause significant damage, The Coffey County Republican reported. Severe thunderstorms destroyed some trees in Anderson County with another funnel cloud spotted near Greeley. Hail fell near Burlington and in southern Coffey County that measured 1.75 inches in diameter.
Labette County
plans tax sale
OSWEGO Labette County commissioners plan a tax sale for delinquent property taxes in June, The Parsons Sun reported. The county counselor said he plans to have them every four months after that starting in October. The last tax sale was in December 2014 when 37 of about 83 parcels sold and brought in $41,000. Parcels that didnt sell were rolled into the petition for the 2018 and may contain undesirable property like small strips or land in a flood plain.
Students could get free school supplies
CHANUTE Elementary school students likely will get free school supplies next fall. The USD 413 Foundation plans to provide school supplies for all students at Chanute Elementary School in the fall at a cost of about $10 per student. Organizers hope to raise about $9,000 and expect to meet that goal.
