County sues over shoddy road work

GARNETT — Anderson County filed a lawsuit against a Utah company for a 2015 road project the county says remains a problem, according to The Anderson County Review. The county’s suit asks to forfeit the bond carried by Coughlin Company because a nine-mile stretch of 1600 Road west of Garnett has not been repaired according to the contract.

Erie hosts annual Special Olympics

ERIE — Erie High School hosted its sixth annual Special Olympics Kansas Southeast Region Spring Games last week, The Parsons Sun reported. About 434 Special Olympics athletes and coaches attended the spring track and field events. The 28 teams came from 12 area counties, including Allen County.

Free concert planned in Chanute

CHANUTE — Six bands with local connections plan a free concert in downtown Chanute May 20 to honor former Chanute resident and entrepreneur Bud Ross, The Chanute Tribune reported. The event will offer a beer garden and food vendors.

Hotel plan reworked

PARSONS — A new incentive package is expected to help a hotel developer hit with higher-than-expected construction costs, The Parsons Sun reported. The new agreement offered by the city of Parsons would cost the city less money by using industrial revenue bonds. The difference would be how the developer would recoup some of the costs in the $8 million project near Tolen Creek Park.

City still gives free electricity to events

GARNETT — Civic organizations in Garnett will continue to get free electricity for public events, despite concerns that local businesses compete with those events and essentially end up footing the bill for the electricity, according to The Anderson County Review. City commissioners heard complaints that commercial food vendors get free electricity at events like the Square Fair, county fair and Cornstock music festival, taking money away from local restaurants.
