Charges requested against K-9 handler
PARSONS — The handler of the Parsons Police Department’s K-9 unit may face criminal charges after the animal died in August.
An autopsy report indicated exposure to extreme heat was the sole cause of the death of Karim, a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois, the Parsons Sun reported.
Karim was found unresponsive in an outdoor kennel after working a 12-hour shift with officer Devon Wisdom on Aug. 21, the newspaper said. Temperatures that day were at or near 100.
After receiving the autopsy report last week, the Labette County Sheriff’s Office said it would request animal cruelty charges be filed against Wisdom, the K-9’s handler.
Wisdom has been on administrative leave during the investigation.
Wreck kills Missouri woman
PARSONS — A Missouri woman died Saturday afternoon in a collision with a semi-tractor trailer east of Parsons on U.S. 400.
The accident happened when a 2015 Chevrolet Impala driven by Nancy Davis, 78, Marshfield, Mo., was westbound and crossed the center line and struck an eastbound truck driven by Tracey J. Butler, 43, of Bartow, Fla.
Davis was pronounced dead at the scene. Butler was injured and taken to Labette Health for suspected minor injuries, according to the KHP.
Davis wore a seat belt. Butler did not.
Gallery features Poe
CHANUTE — The Chanute Art Gallery will put Edgar Allen Poe under the spotlight — or make that moonlight, later this month.
The gallery has planned an outdoor event featuring Poe’s works as read by the Blue Comet Theatre League, the Chanute Tribune reported.
The Chanute Public Library will host the event in the Irene Neely Hudson Pocket Park behind the art gallery at 7 p.m. Oct. 27 and 28.
A full moon will add to the atmosphere, the newspaper noted. Attendees should bring chairs and blankets.
In case of inclement weather, the event will be at the Memorial Auditorium at 101 S. Lincoln St.
