Labette to fund transportation program
OSWEGO — Labette County will help fund a public transportation service.
Commissioners approved a $4,826 expenditure to help fund the service, which will be administered by the Southeast Kansas-Community Action Program (SEK-CAP).
The service will be provided three days a week, but could expand to five days a week if demand exists, the Parsons Sun reported.
The Local Health Equity Team is putting in $5,000 from a grant.
SEK-CAP now operates in Neosho, Crawford and Cherokee counties and will soon start transportation in Bourbon County.
“It would be a disservice to Labette County if we didn’t do this,” Commissioner Vince Schibi said, according to the newspaper. “It’s going to be a good service. Very timely. There’s a lot of need right now.”
Emporia approves new skate park
EMPORIA — Emporia is getting a new skate park.
Emporia city commissioners approved a $500,000 contract with American Ramp Company to design and build a new skate park in the east part of town, the Emporia Gazette reported.
Half of the funding comes from an anonymous donor in honor of Maddox Gutierrez, a local teenager who had approached the city in 2021 about improving its skate park facilities.
Construction is scheduled to take about a year, the newspaper reported.
DA accused of misconduct
LAWRENCE — Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez stands accused of violating multiple rules of professional conduct.
Among the complaints were that she allegedly called a judge a liar and a sexist, implied he was racist, sent him inappropriate texts and yelled and cursed about him to the point that attorneys in her office resigned under protest, the Lawrence Journal World reported.
