County stunned by wind farm setback
ERIE Neosho County Commissioners werent happy with plans to require a 1,000- foot setback between property lines and the base of wind turbines for a planned wind energy project, according to the Chanute Tribune. The energy company previously offered a setback of 1,425 feet from houses of non-participating residents and a setback of 1,200 feet from homes of landowners who signed leases. Some opponents sought a one-mile setback from the property line. Apex plans between 100 to 130 generators on about 41,000 acres, with construction to begin in 2019.
City debates commission size
GARNETT Mayor Jody Cole plans to initiate a protest petition against a coming ordinance to add two additional seats to the Garnett City Commission, The Anderson County Review reported. Voters on Nov. 6 approved a non-binding advisory measure, 553-496, to increase the commission from three to five members. Two of the three commissioners agreed to approve an ordinance to do so, but Cole said she wanted the city to have another election with a binding vote and more information.
Chetopa to limit number of dogs
CHETOPA In addition to plans to limit livestock, except chickens, from the Chetopa city limits, council members agreed to limit the number of dogs in a household, according to The Parsons Sun. A new ordinance would allow up to six dogs over the age of 6 months per family. If approved, all dogs over the limit will be removed within 60 days from the date the ordinance is passed.
Entities join forces for eco-devo
PARSONS City commissioners approved an agreement for a collaborative economic development effort called Grow Labette County, The Parsons Sun reported. It will include the Great Plains Industrial Park and Labette County. Great Plains will pay the city $60,000 annually and the county will chip in $20,000 each year. The program begins in January.
