Humboldt man arrested in Fredonia

FREDONIA — A Humboldt man was arrested recently on suspicion of stealing a flatbed semi-tractor trailer from RK Steel in Fredonia, The Wilson County Citizen reported. Michael Naff, 33, was taken to the Wilson County jail after a traffic stop June 24. The theft was reported earlier that day and the truck was stopped when a Fredonia police officer saw it at a roundabout.

Pittsburg man killed in Parsons

PARSONS — Police in Parsons are investigating as a homicide the death of a Pittsburg man found dead June 20, according to The Parsons Sun. Police responded to a report of a dead man at an apartment and found the body of Tyjuan Maurice Campbell, age 21. He appeared to have suffered from multiple gunshot wounds, possibly from a handgun, a report said.

Couple grows rice in eastern Kansas

OTTAWA — A Franklin County couple expects to harvest about 300 pounds of rice this year with what is likely the most ever grown in the region, The Ottawa Herald reported. Koji and Susan Nakeo, who harvested their first rice crop last year, terraced three paddies on 10 acres of farmland. The upper one is used to collect water from rain or a well, and the two lower paddies are filled ankle- to mid-calf with water and rice seedlings. Koji is a native of Kure City, Japan; Susan hails from Fredonia. They send the rice to Sukyo Mahikari centers, an international organization to promote peace and harmony through spiritual purification.

K-9 joins Labette Co. Sheriff’s Department

OSWEGO — The newest deputy in Labette County has four legs and lots of energy, The Parsons Sun reported. Memphis, a 3-year-old German shepherd, reported for duty June 6 with K-9 officer and sheriff’s deputy Tony Adamson. Memphis is trained in narcotics detection, tracking, article searches and handler safety. She’s already found marijuana and meth from a traffic stop and has been deployed to about 10 stops.

Businessman gives millions to plaza

OTTAWA — The owner of industrial businesses in Ottawa pledged millions of dollars to build an outdoor events plaza in the city, The Ottawa Herald reported. Lonnie King of Image Resource Group, which owns Ottawa’s Fashion Inc. and Universal Sign & Display LLC, will build and donate all structures for a project called Legacy Square, with 20,000 square feet of green space, canopies and a pavilion for outdoor event. The company’s donation is estimated at $2.3 million of the $4.3 million total cost.

Project to end water dumping

PARSONS — New holding basins will add 13 million gallons of holding capacity at the Parsons wastewater treatment plant to satisfy an order from the Environmental Protection Agency to stop dumping untreated water into Labette Creek, The Parsons Sun reported. The basins will hold stormwater until it can be treated and released into the creek. The cost of the project and other improvements, at $1.7 million, is significantly lower than the city’s other option, to build new tanks for $10 million.

Courthouse hours reduced for heat

FREDONIA — The first official days of summer brought a heat wave and reduced hours to the Wilson County courthouse last week, according to The Wilson County Citizen. The air conditioner quit working and a new compressor won’t arrive until after July 2. Courthouse offices will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. until the unit is repaired. The second floor of the building has no windows.
