Flint Hills trail becomes state park
OTTAWA The Flint Hills Nature Trail officially became part of the states park system Tuesday, The Ottawa Herald reported. Gov. Jeff Colyer signed Senate Bill 321, which designated the trail as a state park, during an Onward Ottawa celebration of the new Downtown River Plaza. The new state park will intersect the Prairie Spirit Rail Trail and the River Plaza at First and Walnut streets. The trail is 117 miles long and covers six counties from Osawatomie to Council Grove.
Smoking prohibited in Parsons parks
PARSONS City commissioners plan to make smoking off limits in city parks except in designated areas, according to The Parsons Sun. Vaping also would be banned except in the smoking areas.
Club places flags for fundraising effort
CHANUTE Kiwanis members placed 120 flags at homes around Chanute Thursday for Flag Day as part of a fundraising project, The Chanute Tribune reported. Volunteers placed the flags on the lawns of homeowners who paid for the service. Money raised by the project supports several projects, including providing dictionaries to third grade students, medals to the top 10 percent of Chanute High School graduates and a Christmas clothing project.
City staff delay major road rebuild
PARSONS City staff asked commissioners to delay a plan to reconstruct a few heavily damaged blocks of Morgan Avenue, The Parsons Sun reported. Residents in the area have asked for years to resurface the street, but staff said its too far gone and needs to be rebuilt. City officials said they wanted to concentrate on street overlay projects, and the Morgan Avenue project would cost too much money.
Bicyclists descend on Fredonia
FREDONIA Several hundred bicyclists pedaled into Fredonia during a Bike Across Kansas event last week, making an overnight stop at Fredonia Jr./ Sr. High School, The Wilson County Citizen reported. The 559-mile ride started June 9 at the Kansas-Colorado line and ended Saturday near Fort Scott, at the Kansas-Missouri line.
