Cynthia Jacobson, vice president of student affairs, presented changes to the existing credit by examination policy. In the policy, which was adopted in 1980, community college students were able to earn course credit through a non-traditional educational experience.
For example, a student with previous experience in accounting could test out of a lower accounting class and into a higher level course. A student must receive a 70 percent or better on such an exam to receive class credit. If the student did not receive this percentage he or she would be required to take the lower-level course.
Jacobson said this policy has not been efficient for students or teachers. She said too many times teachers are burdened with conducting tests that students fail.
Instead she suggested if students want to receive credit for prior learning they need to get tested through outside programs, including College Level Examination Program, DSST or Advanced Placement standarized tests or military educational experience. Such credits will then be counted toward graduation and may be used to fulfill curriculum requirements.
Credit for prior learning will not be calculated in the cumulative grade point average. The new policy was passed.
Bids for a campus lawnmower and a college farm lawnmower were presented. The trustees accepted a bid from O’Malley Equipment Co. for the farm mower at $4,000 for a John Deere. This includes the trade-in of the college’s mower. For the college mower they accepted a bid of $15,119.06 from Triple K for a Grasshopper mower.
Steve Troxel, vice president of finance and operations, presented bids for athletic insurance. The trustees agreed to renew the insurance for the 2015/16 school year with Susan Booth of MDR Insurance for $28,604.
Brian Counsil, Neodesha, was hired as the new vice president of finance and operations. Counsil has his bachelors degree and MBA from Pittsburg State University. He has a long background in accounting. He will start July 1.
