Ed and Jeanette Abbott say “anything goes” when it comes to outfitting a kitchen or bathroom. Light and dark woods can be paired together to give a strong two-tone contrast. Pewter inserts can make dark cherry wood look even richer. Or warm green hues against white panels give a kitchen or bath the feeling of spring year-round.
“It’s all about experimentation and seeing what appeals to you,” said Jeanette.
The Abbotts own Advanced Cabinet Systems at 9 N. Jefferson, and make a makeover relatively painless.
“We measure, design and price it all for you at no cost,” Ed said of their services.
From now until the end of January they are also offering 10 percent off top-of-the-line Kraft Maid cabinets. The sale is on top of a factory-wide discount of 18 percent.
The only work not done directly by the Abbotts is actual installation of cabinets and countertops which Ed, 72, contracts to Russell Davidson of Uniontown. Davidson also does installations for Kitchens & More, LaHarpe, and Hittle & Hood, Chanute.
Besides cabinetry the Abbotts stock all kinds of countertops from laminate to granite, Meganite and quartz. They also carry onyx — which not only suits countertops, but also makes a good shower base, Ed said.
Sinks and fixtures also are available. One display features a bold black kitchen sink that looks especially handsome with sleek faucet and knobs.
ED’S LOVE of cabinetry began in 1970 when Jeanette gave him a radial arm saw.
“I was hooked,” he said of working with wood.
The passion turned to profession and though he intended to retire when he moved to his hometown of Iola in 2003, he found it hard to shake.
The Abbotts moved from Holiday Island, Ark. where they had lived for nine years. Before that they lived in Garland, Texas for 26 years.
Their location on the east side of the square has led to a symbiotic relationship with Flynn Appliance, a door to the north.
Advanced Cabinet System’s kitchen display sports shiny appliances from Flynn’s.
And, “We network together,” Ed said of he and Thurman Flynn. As evidence, Ed holds up a cabinet door he’s fashioned for a customer of Thurman’s who needed some modifications in order to accommodate a larger oven.
Today’s new appliances are either larger or smaller than earlier makes, Ed said, frequently requiring cabinets and cooktops to be refashioned. Ed is happy to make them fit.
