The switch to all digital imaging at Allen County Hospital was completed this week with the addition of a Siemens Mammomat Novation digital mammography machine.
“We are so pleased to be able to offer digital imaging here in Iola. Our radiology department is now as technologically advanced as those found in a larger hospital in the city,” said Katie Gant, director of imaging services at ACH.
The new mammography machine saves technicians time because they no longer have to develop X-ray film. Images are transmitted directly to a computer screen that is attached to the machine. Another plus is there is less discomfort for the patient with the new equipment.
During a mammogram, the new machine will isolate areas which are suspicious or abnormal that warrant further examinations.
The new mammogram machine was made possible through Hospital Corporation of America, the current manager of Allen County Hospital.
Mammogram results can be sent to other hospitals affiliated with HCA. Patients can also get a compact disk with results 3to take to their doctor or another hospital.
“The compact disks are so much easier to handle than a big X-ray negative,” Gant said.
Those receiving a mammogram at ACH will receive results by letter within two weeks of the procedure.
PAULA SELL, director of human resources at ACH, was the first patient to be examined with the new equipment on Wednesday.
“I am excited about being the first person to use the new mammogram machine,” Sell said.
Mammograms are recommended yearly for all women over the age of 40.
“We at the hospital and our resident physicians are excited about the advanced technology we are now able to offer people here in Iola,” Gant said.
