ACC looks at master plan beyond Masterson

The college will alter its long-term planning with the retirement of President John Masterson. They'll have a 'bridge plan' for the rest of the 2021-22 school year instead of developing and implementing new plans for the future.

With Allen Community College President John Masterson set to retire, the college is altering its long-term planning process a bit.

College trustees approved Masterson’s request Tuesday to institute a “bridge plan” for the rest of the 2021-22 school year.

Masterson explained the rationale: The college was due to develop a new set of plans through the spring semester, and to begin taking steps toward implementing them immediately.

But having a new college administrator on board would allow for a fresh set of eyes, he continued.

With that in mind, the coming weeks and months will instead focus on the long-range goals implemented most recently in 2017.

The first goal — to build or maintain facilities and programs to ensure top-notch educational opportunities — covers several avenues, including ensuring the viability of the college’s outreach facilities in Burlingame, Masterson said.

Other goals, such as sustaining enrollment numbers either in person or online; enhancing partnerships with the community, businesses and industries; maintaining fiscal sustainability; and attracting, developing and retaining well-qualified employees also will be looked at through the spring.

TRUSTEES approved a school calendar for the 2022-23 academic year.

In recent years, colleges and high schools across the country have made efforts to ensure their school years were in sequence, explained Cynthia Jacobson, vice president for student affairs.

While issues have cropped up along the way, now the focus is for the schools and colleges to have spring break the same week, and then build out from there, she continued.

Classes for the  2022-23 year will begin Aug. 22, with spring break 2023 set for March 13-17.
