The Allen Community College music program is trying something new this year for its fall concert — a twist with a lot of soul.
The program at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Bowlus Fine Arts Center, will celebrate the history of the blues. Students have been hard at work fine-tuning pieces from Motown and Dixieland, as well as some Gospel music. There are even pieces from Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder.
“It’s good to be back at the Bowlus, our program is looking stronger than ever,” said Ted Clous, ACC music director, about his music students.
Clous said the decision to take a different approach this year was based largely on his taste in music.
“I’m a big fan of Motown, I really like the blues,” Clous said.
He said he has seen a lot of support in the community for the music program in recent concerts, and he expects no less Thursday. The fall concert last year took place at the college, but his department decided to move back to the Bowlus this year.
He said the program should be a refreshing change from the normal classical form of orchestral concerts. Community members will assist with the performance in the orchestra as well — Clous’ wife will even play trumpet with the students.
Clous said he has been very impressed at the talent of his students and the amount of work they have put into their musical pieces. He said they care for the music and are willing to play anything given to them with full effort.
“You can really throw anything at them and they will be willing to do it,” Clous said. “They’ll put their best foot forward no matter what.”
Clous said he looks forward to showing the community something new this year, and would love to see the community’s support.
The concert is free to the public.
