Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Smart, who own a grocery and meat market in LaHarpe, have purchased the Shoprite Market on N. Second Street from Warren Schmidt.

Day Brothers Construction of Moran are the apparent low bidders for the construction of a new city hall for Iola. The cost, including architects fees, will be $147,156, about $2,000 under the $150,000 approved by the voters.

Glen Singer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Singer of Savonburg, is the recipient of a scholarship hall residency to the University of Kansas. He is a graduate of the Allen County Community Junior College where he was student council president last year.

Jerry Wright of Iola has sold 19.6 acres of land to the city for use as an industrial park. The land lies across the street south from the Iola Molded Plastics boat plant, fronting on the paved street which lies in front of the plant. It is accessible to the Santa Fe and Missouri Pacific tracks. Utilities are on the site. Purchase price of the site was $30,000.

Workmen are putting a new front on Trouts Department Store at the intersection of Madison and Jefferson. An awning and metal siding are being placed on the front and west sides of the building and should be completed soon.

George Epps, assistant secondary roads engineer with the Kansas highway department yesterday condemned the Kentucky Street bridge which spans Elm Creek southeast of Iola. Piers supporting the bridge have been undercut and slabs of concrete on the underside and sides of the bridge have become dislodged and dropped into the creek, making the bridge unsafe for vehicle traffic.
