FORT SCOTT — Three fatality accidents occurred within 24 hours and seven miles of each other on U.S. 69 near Fort Scott this week.
The first occurred Tuesday morning when Robert J. Lyons, 82, Fort Scott, pulled onto the highway on the south edge of Fort Scott.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, his pickup was struck by a southbound car driven by Kenneth L. Vandorn of Pittsburg.
Lyons was declared dead at the scene. Vandorn was uninjured.
The second fatality occurred Tuesday evening when Roger L. Sickels, 47, Mapleton, was struck and killed by a pickup driven by Brandon M. Davis, 21, Fort Scott.
According to KHP, Sickels was walking northbound in the southbound lanes in an attempt to flag down a vehicle. He crossed over into the passing lane, where he was struck by Davis. Neither Davis nor a passenger were injured.
Shortly after 5 a.m. Wednesday, about seven miles south of Fort Scott, Travis Morrison, 23, Overland Park, crossed the center line while southbound. His car collided head-on with a northbound vehicle transport driven by Edward T. Sallee, 44, Francis, Okla.
Morrison’s car became engulfed in flames as both vehicles came to rest in an east ditch.
Sallee was not injured.
“It’s tragic all the way around,” Bourbon County Sheriff Ron Gray told the Fort Scott Tribune.
