The keys to a newly built home will be handed over Thursday to a Wichita family with several ties to the Iola area.
Carl and Stacey Hall were chosen as the recipients for the weeklong home-building project as part of the popular “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” television show.
Carl Hall, 40, is a former Wichita State University baseball player who was paralyzed in a traffic accident in June. Just four days before the accident he was laid off from his job as a pharmaceutical sales representative.
Stacey Hall is the granddaughter of Iolans Bob and Virginia Latta. Her parents, Charley and Sandra (Latta) Adams were both Iolans as well. She is the great-granddaughter of Robert and Virginia Latta and niece of Randy Latta, Cara Cleaver and Mindy Holland.
As many as 2,000 workers have been at the construction site near Mid-Continent Airport on the west edge of Wichita since last Thursday, working 24 hours a day in order to complete the project within a week.
Carl Hall was named the Missouri Valley Conference player of the year in 1994.
He and Stacey have four children. They had to move out of their bi-level house in west Wichita after the accident because it wasn’t suitable for a wheelchair. They’ve been renting a two-bedroom duplex.
The new ranch-style home will feature many amenities to help Hall, the Wichita Eagle reported today. Some of those include an elevator giving him access to a full basement, a device to help him get from a bed to the bathroom and voice-activated controls that will allow him to turn lights on and off and open and close doors.
Bob Cook, of Derby’s Bob Cook homes, said construction has proceeded ahead of schedule, with interior and exterior painting all that remains before Thursday’s presentation.
The home, near K-42 and Maize Road, is scheduled to be revealed to the family at 3 p.m. Thursday. The event is open to the public.
