Buried under frosty snow, way up north is a small little town full of people who almost know about their love life.
The Iola High School Theater Department will perform “Almost, Maine,” at 7 tonight and Friday at the Bowlus Fine Arts Center.
The play is described as a modern romantic comedy. It doesn’t follow the traditional structure of a play performance. Each scene has a new story and new characters. The one thing the characters have in common is the setting. The play takes place in Almost, Maine, a small town in northern Maine that doesn’t quite exist. Everything takes place at night on a cold, snowy Friday night during winter.
Richard Spencer, the director, said he has been waiting to do this play for a few years. The production is one of the most performed show in high schools across the country.
“I’m really pleased with the kids,” Spencer said. “The show originally calls for four actors but we use 19.”
Spencer likes to get as many students involved in theater as possible. Altogether he said there are 30 students involved with the play, backstage and on stage. Spencer said he likes how the scenes leave the audience wondering what happens later with the characters.
The students do a great job of tackling one of life’s biggest gifts, love. The scenes depict what it’s like to say I love you first, move on from a break up and realize you love someone unexpected. The show is quick and witty and the students do an excellent job of delivering the jokes.
The play runs for approximately 90 minutes.
