GREELEY — Two adults and a child died in a house fire in Greeley on Wednesday morning.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department and the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office, according to a report from Anderson County Fire and Emergency Management.
The fire was reported a little before 7 a.m., and dispatchers did not know at that time if occupants were inside.
Heavy fire was visible when Greeley firefighters arrived at the two-story structure, and the fire spread rapidly through the home.
“Once the fire was brought under control it was believed that occupants were inside but due to the significant damage interior firefighting operations were not possible,” the report said.
An investigation and visual inspection from ladders allowed fire crews to determine the three occupants had perished.
The Olathe Fire Department was called to stabilize the structure, remove the victims and investigate the cause of the fire.
The names of the victims have not yet been released.
THE GREELEY tragedy follows a series of fires in Anderson County in the past week or so.
Just one week earlier, on Feb. 23, three tenants of an apartment house in Garnett escaped serious injury when one unit caught on fire.
A 3-year-old boy was inside the house while his mother was on the porch talking with law enforcement officers when they saw flames through the downstairs window. The mother went inside the house to retrieve him.
A third resident was not in the building.
Anderson County fire crews also have battled several minor grass fires and a couple of significant wildland fires, the fire and emergency management department said.
